One of the earliest forms of low-temperature overglaze in China is known as ancient color. Based on archaeological evidence, the earliest examples of five-color porcelain painted with this method appeared in central China nearly a thousand years ago.

Scholars have long debated the origin of the technique. Some believe it may have been influenced by painted glazed pottery from West Asia and introduced into China through the Silk Road. Others argue that both the pigments and the low-temperature glass glaze were developed independently by Chinese artisans.

Gold Decoration on Ceramics

Gold Decoration Before the Ming Dynasty

Before and during the Ming dynasty, gold decoration was usually made with gold leaf. The earliest known examples appear on Tang dynasty painted ceramic figurines, although they are extremely rare.

After the Song dynasty, more porcelain pieces began to use gold decoration, but the number remained limited. One reason may be that gold decoration had not yet become part of the standard ceramic production system. It was likely handled by goldsmiths or other specialized craftsmen rather than by kiln workshops themselves.

This may explain why few gold-decorated ceramic fragments are found at ancient kiln sites. They are more often discovered in tombs, kiln burials, and other archaeological contexts.

How Was Gold Leaf Made?

Gold is extremely malleable. Ancient craftsmen took advantage of this property by hammering gold into very thin leaf for decoration.

The process began by beating gold into a sheet about 1 mm thick, known as a gold strip. Each sheet was then separated with special paper, bundled in sets of forty, and hammered repeatedly on a gold-beating stone until it became extremely thin, sometimes only one-third the thickness of paper.

This was a slow and labor-intensive process, which is one reason gold decoration was never common. Surviving pieces are especially rare and valuable today.

Two Ways to Apply Gold Leaf

There were two main methods for decorating ceramics with gold leaf:

1. Gilding

In this method, a brush was used to apply adhesive directly onto the ceramic surface in the shape of a design. When the adhesive became slightly dry, gold leaf was pressed onto it. After the glue dried completely, the excess gold was brushed away, leaving only the decorated areas covered in gold.

2. Incised Gold Decoration

This method used a hard tool to carve lines into the glazed surface first. Adhesive and gold leaf were then applied into the grooves. Once the adhesive dried, the extra gold on the surface was removed, leaving a clean engraved gold design.

In both methods, the adhesive was essential. The exact material used by ancient craftsmen is still debated. Some believe it was garlic juice, while others think it may have been raw lacquer. Because of its adhesive strength and traditional use, lacquer is often considered the more likely answer.

Why So Few Gold-Decorated Pieces Survive

Although gold decoration is visually striking, it is not easy to preserve. The adhesive used for gold leaf was usually organic, and after hundreds of years, much of it naturally broke down. Since the coating was also very thin, only a small number of pieces survive in complete condition.

Gold decoration was also expensive and not especially practical, so it was never widely used. For that reason, surviving examples are rare and highly prized.

Strictly speaking, early gold decoration was not part of the normal ceramic firing process. It was closer to a later finishing technique, similar in some ways to lacquer inlay work.
